Exploring Meaning, Principles & Beliefs Concerning “Acupuncture”

Acupuncture means to puncture on specific points also referred to as Acu points. It is a therapy whose deep roots come from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is a therapy that not only helps to treat symptoms but is also fully capable of diagnosing, treating, and curing a disease. Acupuncture is a full-fledged diagnostic treatment method.

Every living organism has a very special specific energy in it that helps the organism to live and perform various activities. Some call it a Living force and in Humans some call it Soul and some Vitality and in Acupuncture, it is called “Qi” i.e. Energy. An equilibrium of energy in the body results in Health and the slightest disturbance leads to discomfort; mainly called disease.

Principle of Acupuncture

The concept of acupuncture is based on 5 element theory. Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal these 5 elements are the main foundations of the human body. Each element has a characteristic role in healthy functioning and excess of deficiency of it can lead to disturbance of Qi.

What actually happens in Acupuncture? The main treatment tool of acupuncture is Needles. These needles can be made of stainless steel, or plastic in the modern world; traditionally speaking they can be made of gold, silver, copper, or brass and our ancestors used sharp pointed stones.

These fine needles are used to puncture specific acupoints. These acupoints are located on every organ meridian and there are 12 organ meridians running from throughout our body. These meridians are also called energy channels as they work as a medium of travel for Qi.

So puncturing on a particular place or point in these meridians helps in correcting the Qi of the body which solves the purpose of treatment.

Sometimes instead of needles, some other form is used on these acupoints like:-

  • Pressure application is known as Acupressure,
  • Heat on acupoints known as Moxibustion,
  • Performing Suction on acupoints known as Cupping,
  • An electromagnetic impulse applied on these acupoints is called Electro-acupuncture.
How do modern sciences see acupuncture?

Modern sciences do not believe in the YIN-YANG concept i.e. good-bad energy balance that drives the living force or Qi, but it surely accepts that acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system of the body.

The pain gate theory also accepts and approves the working of puncture in pain control. With increasing number of research papers published around the world shows and marks the emphasis of acupuncture along with conventional medicine and whole and sole therapy for the treatment of diseases.

The feeling of acupuncture-

Generally, Acupuncture is painless but if you fear needles then that can heighten the sensation of needle insertion feeling.

Some people also feel DEQI.

Deqi is commonly translated as “needle sensation,” sometimes as “arrival of qi”. When the correct point of treatment protocol is punctured then energy movement in the body is felt by the patient. This feeling is manifested as heaviness, tingling or itching, numbness or soreness in that area/pathway of the meridian in which qi is moving.

“Life is a balance between holding on and letting go; Yin-Yang is a balance of positive and negative and health is a balance of nutrition and excretion and Acupuncture helps you maintain the Balance of Qi.”
